Ownership of a trademark, normally obtained through registration, grants the exclusive right to prohibit third parties from using identical or similar sians to distinquish identical\u00a0or similar goods and services. In the European Union (EU), two kind of trademarks coexist: the European Union\u00a0Trademark a unitarv right valid in all EU countries and administered bv the European\u00a0Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) with headquarters in Alicante (Spain) and the national trademarks of all EU countries, valid and protected in the corresponding national territory.\u00a0In Spain, the public body in charge of the administration of the Spanish trademark is the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM).<\/p>

Likewise it should be noted that the EU, as a regional and supranational organization, and the different EU countries are members of the Madrid International Trademark System. administered by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).
